A sustainable future for our valued communities, culture, environment, and infrastructure is one of the Torres Strait Island Regional Council’s (TSIRC) top priorities. As such, TSIRC is excited to present the draft Zenadth Kes Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy (CHAS) - a collaborative plan blending Indigenous knowledge, youth perspectives, and climate change expertise to ensure that Torres Strait Island communities continue to thrive in harmony with their environment. The Strategy integrates western science and traditional knowledge so that as our climate changes, our 15 coastal communities remain resilient and safe, confident and ready for coastal hazards such as coastal erosion, storm-tides, and sea-level rise.
The Strategy has been supported by funding through the Queensland Government, in partnership with the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ). It seeks to build on the momentum of other local, State, Commonwealth, and international initiatives to empower local communities in the decision-making process and to collaborate with various partners, including local, regional, and national stakeholders, in addressing coastal risks.
