An autonomous, prosperous and sustainable community and council

Torres Strait Islander flag

The Torres Strait Islander flag symbolises the unity and identity of all Torres Strait Islanders.

Pests & Diseases

Plant and animal pests, and diseases pose a significant threat to our environment and cultural places.

Parks & Gardens

We own and lease many of the parks and sporting areas in our communities.

Our community spaces are used for a broad range of activities such as competitive sporting events, cultural activities and community markets.

Repair and maintenance of parks and sporting areas requires help from many in the community, including volunteers, My Pathways participants, and our Engineering, Building and Community Services teams.

There may be fees, charges and permits needed to use parks and sporting areas, especially for special events.

Native Title

Land Management

Most of the land in each community is Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT).

We're the Trustee of the DOGITs, except for Badu and Mer. On Badu and Mer, land was transferred to the Recognised Native Title Prescribed Body Corporate (RNTBC) under the Torres Strait Islander Land Act 1991 (Qld) and is called Torres Strait Islander Freehold (communal) land.

The RNTBCs hold the land as Trustee and have similar roles to us when acting as Trustee.

Indigenous Knowledge Centres

Housing

TSIRC are Queensland's second largest provider of social housing.

We manage housing for all of our 15 communities, except Kubin which is managed by Queensland’s Department of Housing and Public Works. Our Housing Services portfolio also includes the Building Services Unit.

Health & Wellbeing

Our Health and Wellbeing Program offers opportunities for people living in our communities to enjoy similar levels of physical, emotional and social wellbeing experienced by other Australians.

The Program fosters a sense of community and supports physical activity, sport, education and employment.

It aims to increase social participation through the engagement of Healthy Lifestyle Officers.

Environmental Health

We employ a team of 21 staff to deliver Environmental Health and Animal Management services across our communities.

Services include:

  • Animal management
    • manage animal numbers, and animal health
    • raise community awareness of animal health and wellbeing
    • reduce potential feral animal activity through monitoring and managing of populations
    • engage and deliver veterinary services to all communities.

Disaster Management

The Torres Strait Local Disaster Management Group works to reduce the negative impact disasters can have on communities and responds to disasters when they happen.

Community Disaster Management Groups work together to reduce the effects of a disaster. When a disaster or major emergency happens, they then respond quickly to and ensure communities can recover.
