Earlier today Warren Entsch MP, the Federal Member for Leichhardt, announced the Morrison Government’s investment of $25 million into the Torres Strait to construct seawalls, repair and maintain jetties, and re-establish ferry services between Saibai and Dauan islands.* Stating “These projects will provide a big boost to the local economy, create local jobs, and dramatically improve the liveability but most importantly the safety for the local residents.”
Ken Wyatt, the Minister for Indigenous Australians, visited the region last Monday, commenting “The Torres Strait is facing an ever-present risk of inundation and deteriorating marine landings is making life more difficult in the region” and adding “The seawalls will stabilise the coast and protect the islands from sea flooding and the renewed jetties and ferry service will mean children have a safer ride to and from school.”
Cr. Fred Gela, Mayor of the Torres Strait Island Regional Council, said “We were delighted to receive the news of this support from the Federal Government, which comes after 12 months of conversations and lobbying with both the Federal Member for Leichhardt and the Minister for Indigenous Australians. We sincerely thank them for their assistance”
“The significant investment into critical seawall infrastructure, in addition to the State Government’s previous $20m commitment, will ensure protection for our most affected communities from inundation and erosion.” Mayor Gela said, adding “support for the Dauan ferry service and bringing the associated marine infrastructure up to DDA compliance, is essential in ensuring our community members can travel safely within our region, in particular, our children can access educational opportunities without missing connecting charters or braving severe weather conditions in small vessels.”
